A triumphal arch and defensive bastion, the Porte Cailhau celebrates the victory of Charles VIII and keeps watch over Bordeaux. A visit is a must!

The Porte Cailhau was erected between 1493 and 1496 to commemorate Charles VIII's victory at Fornoue in Italy. The jurats wished to celebrate the monarchy through this edifice combining triumphal arch and defensive structure. On the Place du Palais, lined with bars and restaurants, the Porte Cailhau is three storeys high, with an oval plan and classic defensive features: wooden casements, knocker, portcullis, garrison quarters and machicolations. Pass through the gate to admire the view of Bordeaux and the Pont de Pierre.

la plus belle porte médiévale de Bordeaux
A mon avis , il s'agit de la plus belle porte médiévale de Bordeaux. A voir de jour comme de nuit. Elle est vraiment imposante. Par contre je ne suis pas rentré à l'intérieur car le prix me semblait excessif.

Fait partie du circuit des portes de la ville, mais celle ci est un peu plus stylée, contrairement à ses voisines (de la monnaie et bourgogne en style plus simple)
ce qui est remarquable est sa situation en entrée de la vieille ville et les maisons et façades diverses en son pourtour. A apprécier de la promenade des quais de Garonne, l'effet en sera meilleur.
