Porte Cailhau, both triumphal arch and defensive work erected to commemorate the victory of Charles VIII at Fornoue in Italy

The Cailhau Gate was built between 1493 and 1496 to commemorate the victory of Charles VIII in Fornoue, Italy. The jurats wanted to celebrate the monarchy through this building, both a triumphal arch and a defensive structure. On the Palace Square, which houses many bars and restaurants, the Cailhau Gate rises on three floors with an oval plan, and features classic defensive techniques: wooden casements on the ground floor, a stunner, a harrow, a garrison housing, and a crenelated machicolation crown. Walk through the door and discover a magnificent panoramic view of Old Bordeaux, the banks of the Garonne and the famous Pont de Pierre.
