GONDOLA MONUMENT
Monument dating from the end of the XIXth century, in homage to the Girondins victims of the Terror, by the Bordeaux sculptor Alphonse Dumilatre.
At the end of the 19th century, Bordeaux wanted to build a monument to the Girondin deputies who were victims of the Terror. The pompier-style ensemble features two bronze fountains celebrating Concord, Fraternity, Strength and the Republic, and banishing Lies, Vice and Ignorance, mingled with sea horses spitting water jets. As for the 43-metre-high column, topped by Liberty breaking her chains with one hand and holding the palms of Liberty in the other, it still stands guard over the square, facing the river.
