On the other side of the Pont de Pierre, on the right bank is the bust of Toussaint Louverture. You have to walk to the botanical garden to admire this sculpture, erected in the Angelica Park, along the banks of the Garonne. A figure of the anti-colonialist and abolitionist movement, Toussaint Louverture left its mark on his time. The presence of its bust is one of the rare markers of the slave trade past of the port of Bordeaux, with the permanent exhibitions of the Musée d'Aquitaine. Offered by the Republic of Haiti, it pays tribute to this freed slave, who led the Santo Domingo slave insurrection in 1789. He was arrested and deported on Bonaparte's orders in 1882.
