Grosse Cloche, part of the Bordeaux city walls, later converted into a prison and now a belfry, to be seen on a guided tour
In the Middle Ages, the Grosse Cloche was part of the city's ramparts, before undergoing numerous modifications. A rare surviving monument from this period, it was transformed into a prison - you can still see the drawings and inscriptions of the inmates who counted down their days of confinement - before becoming one of France's most popular tourist attractions. If you like to travel back in time, opt for a guided tour. It's best to come at nightfall, when the Grosse Cloche is lit up in blue!
