Located in the former gardens of the Chartreux convent at the end of the century, this cemetery is home to the graves of leading figures from Bordeaux.
The Chartreuse cemetery is the city's oldest and largest. It was laid out at the end of the 18th century on the former gardens of the Chartreux convent. The alleyways contain the tombs of such luminaries as the painter Francisco Goya, who died in Bordeaux (his body now rests in Madrid, and a monument is dedicated to him in the cemetery), Charles-François Delacroix (father of Eugène Delacroix) and Flora Tristan (woman of letters and initiator of feminism in France).
