There are two very good reasons why some B&Bs rate excellent with top reviews - the place and the people in perfect combination. Many B&Bs can do this. Some do even better and add excellent food and a place where people can gather and feel comfortable. Valerie and Didier accomplish all this at Clos de Vallis.||Just northeast of the medieval town of Sarlat in a wooded park at the end of a valley where a 17th century farmhouse once stood, is now an exceptional B&B with a modern guesthouse, four gîtes, swimming pools, a pond, terraces, and grassy meadows. No longer a farm, it is still the home of a pony, a donkey, a cat and a dog, and Didier and Valerie. Oh, and bullfrogs in the pond that quack like ducks. We also saw woodpeckers and heard a cuckoo bird.||Didier and Valerie are consummate hosts and they work exceptionally well together, from booking and greeting to cooking and serving meals. They offered welcome recommendations for local restaurants and will even call to make reservations for guests. When we had trouble with our rental car, they went above and beyond to help us get it sorted and saved us much anxiety and hassle. ||We were there for eight nights in May and we had room number two, which is just around the corner from the dining room. We thought the noise would carry over, but it did not. Our room was small but adequate, with our own bathroom. It did not have a desk, but we were told to make ourselves at home and use a dining table for writing between meals.||We saw Didier every morning, brightly greeting us with a choice of yogurt, or a plate of assorted cheeses, a fresh hot basket of bread and pastry, cute little rolls of La Conviette French butter, and good-size jars of homemade jam on each table. An excellent coffee machine offered eight hot choices. We had lunch away near sites, but we did use the offered fridge to store items for a picnic we made ahead of time. There is also a wine fridge with an assortment available to purchase.||Guests are also able to book dinner. Valerie offers local favorites along with fresh locally-grown produce. We stayed in for two dinners that week and both were excellent. One night we choose a Monbazillac wine to drink. Our amuse-bouche was a tasty cheesy puff pastry. Valerie was kind to adjust the menu for me because I don’t eat meat. My husband had an appetizer of foie gras with a rich yellow rind of goose fat on nut bread, and I had gravlax with lime juice and pine nuts. Then he had the leg and wing of canard confit, with potatoes and carrots, and I had an Italian pasta dish with tuna and olives. Both were excellent. For dessert, we were given a rendition of strawberry cheese cake, only the base was a sweet dark graham, the white filling was whipped cream, and it was topped with spring strawberries and lime zest. ||We chose Clos de Vallis because it is centrally placed for visiting more than a dozen surrounding top sites. Aside from charming Sarlat, we were able to visit an abbey, a grotto, a fort, several ancient towns, chateaux, gardens, caverns, churches, forts, caves with rivers, and caves with prehistoric art. ||There are very few places where I can say I did not want to leave, and this was one of them. We were just getting to know Valerie and Didier and feeling at home in their loving hosting hands, when we had to leave. For those planning to visit the area, we highly recommend you stay at Clos de Vallis, where the place and the people make an excellent combination.
