From the Latin Juncetum, Jonchery is the village where rushes grow. To this name will be added that of its river, the Vesle, to distinguish it from its homonym on Suippes. On Monday, October 5, 1914, the sky over Jonchery was the scene of the first air combat. After a long pursuit, Sergeant Joseph Frantz and mechanic Louis Quenault shot down a German plane on a reconnaissance mission over the Vesle valley. In 1986, the place de la gare was renamed in their honor. The 12th century church of Saint-Georges is a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture with its Latin cross plan and its chapels dedicated to Mary and Barbara.
