This welcoming, dynamic sub-prefecture is irrigated by the Aisne river. Remarkable men have left their mark on the town's history: Hippolyte Taine (18128-1893), a renowned philosopher and historian; Paul Drouot (1896-1915), a young poet killed in the Great War; Albert Caquot (1881-1976), "father of the engineers of France"; and Roland Garros, killed in action in 1918 a few kilometers from here and buried in the communal cemetery, next to which is a German cemetery. Push open the doors of Saint-Maurille church. To the east, towards La Croix-aux-Bois, you'll find the national necropolis and the German military cemetery at Chestres.
