Rethel, probably founded around 940, was a fortified town for several centuries. After the destruction of the feudal castle overlooking the town during the French Revolution, the last remnants of the fortifications disappeared in the first half of the 19th century, as the population turned to stone. After the Russian occupation in 1814, followed by the German in 1870, Rethel was largely destroyed in the last two world wars. The sign on the Pont de l'Europe bridge over the Aisne recalls Rethel's dark history: "L'Aisne, passage des invasions: 1411, 1543, 1650, 1814, 1870, 1914, 1940".
