The village of Saint-Morel was also at the heart of the Argonne offensive. Forcibly evacuated in April 1917, it fell into the hands of the Germans who placed their observation post in the bell tower of the Saint-Maurice church. This remarkable 16th century building in flamboyant Gothic style was classified as a historic monument in 1919. On 5 October 1918, not far from there, the plane of Roland Garros was shot down during an aerial combat and crashed 2 km north of the village. A stele was erected at the site of the crash.
