It's from the south, a little on the wrong side of the tracks, that you should discover this town, the border between the two terroirs of Marche and Berry. It stands out on its rocky outcrop, with its church dominating the village, which is tiered above the vast pond formed by the impoundment of the Portefeuille stream.Saint-Benoît-du-Sault has been awarded the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" (Most Beautiful Villages in France) label, and is well worth an attentive stroll. To discover its secrets, follow the little paths that wind through the village, and in particular the old "chemin de ronde" overlooking the gardens. Then head down rue du Portugal, admiring the almost intact 15th and 16th century houses with their russet tiles, and dream away on the old Filloux bridge. Continue on to the church, rebuilt in the first quarter of the 11th century, pass under the portal and admire the shop windows, which have retained their provincial character and great authenticity. Allow around an hour to cover the kilometer-and-a-half circuit. Saint-Benoît-du-Sault is a village worth visiting for its history, its beautiful architecture and its landscapes. To find out more about Saint-Benoît, ask at the tourist office on Place des Augustins. Don't hesitate to ask for a map of the town, full of interesting information and historical anecdotes, or for a list of discovery tours.
