Visiting hours are usually between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., with closures on Mondays and/or Sundays. Some points of interest close on public holidays. The busiest days are weekend days.

Reservations are essential for certain museums, such as the Georgia O'Keefe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, or her home and studio in Abiquiu. The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston also recommends booking times, although you can still get in, if availability permits, on the day. Most guided tours operated by companies require advance booking.

Budget & Tips

Some museums offer special opening hours or days with free admission, often during the week, usually on Thursdays. Find out more on their websites. Some museums are free every day, including the Mesnil Collection in Houston, the Rothko Chapel and the Cy Twombly Gallery. Otherwise, expect to pay around US$15-22 for adult admission to an art or history museum, and less than US$10 for smaller museums in smaller towns. Visitor passes are also available, giving you entry to more than one museum, valid for several days. These can be purchased online or from tourist offices.

Smokers

Texans aren't big smokers, and it's a practice that's frowned upon by the locals. Avoid smoking in public spaces, even outdoors. Reserve this time at home or in bars with dedicated areas. In city centers, it's more common.

For smokers, it's common practice to buy packs of cigarettes on Indian reserves, which sell them much more cheaply.

What's very local

Spending a weekend in the Hill Country during the Texas Wildflower blooming season is a must ! It's the time when the locals get out their cameras for photos, and everyone has one framed at home.
