Pisa's main train station serves most major Tuscan towns (Grosseto, Lucca, Livorno, Volterra, Cecina...) and Italian cities (Turin, Milan, Rome...). Trains leave every 30 minutes for Florence Santa Maria Novella (an hour and a half journey). The main bus stops are in the square opposite the station.

If you're travelling by car,near the station, you can leave your vehicle in the pay parking lot in piazza Vittorio Emanuele II (€4/hour, sometimes with special offers in summer).

Buses run to Galileo Galilei airport in one direction, and to Piazza dei Miracoli in the other direction, passing through the train station. Tickets cost €1.50 and can be purchased at tobacconists and newsagents, or via SMS. To get around Pisa by bus, the Autolinee Toscana (AT) buses are numerous and quite reliable. The ticket also costs 1,50 €, valid for 70 minutes. If you want to do as the Pisans do on weekends, you can easily reach the seaside resorts of Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia for 2.50 €.

Florence-Peretola Airport, also known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport, is located 4 km northwest of downtown Florence, Tuscany. The airport offers several means of transport to the city center, including cabs, buses and rental cars. Parking options are also available. The airport also offers stores, restaurants and other services to make your stay enjoyable.

Five minutes walk from the famous ramparts, the small railway station of Lucca is located on the Viareggio - Florence line and is the terminus of the lines to Pisa and Aulla. It is operated exclusively by regional trains (the most important station in the province of Lucca is located in Viareggio).

ATAF's orange buses are no more. Since 2021, the Autolinee Toscane (AT) group has been managing bus routes in the Florentine metropolitan area. But don't worry, all timetables and services remain unchanged. You can buy a ticket(biglietto) at newsagents and tobacconists, or at the AT stand in the SMN station, or directly online. Don't forget to punch your ticket (checks are frequent, and fines of around 50 euros can be imposed)!

Santa Maria Novella (SMN) is the main railway station of Florence. It is located northwest of the historic center, in the eponymous Santa Maria Novella district. A dense network of buses allows you to travel from the station to all the neighborhoods, but also to the surrounding cities (shuttle to/from the airport of Pisa in particular). The station is also served by the T1 and T2 streetcar lines (the recent T2 line provides a direct link with the airport).

A word of advice! It is better to use the Rapida bus (No. 131R) rather than the Ordinaria, as it is non-stop between Florence (via Luigi Alamanni, in front of Santa Maria Novella station) and Siena (piazza Antonio Gramsci), so faster (about 1 hour 15 minutes). The terminus, piazza Gramsci - via Federigo Tozzi, is located in the heart of Siena's city centre. Tickets can be purchased either at the ticket office (in the Lizza underground passage in Siena, in Santa Maria Novella station in Florence), or in advance online, or on board but with an additional charge.

Connections between the Siena railway station (stazione), located two kilometres from the historic centre, and the Piazza del Sale on buses Nos. 3, 4, 8 and 17 (allow a good five minutes). Every day, more than thirty direct trains (Florence-Empoli-Siena railway line) connect Siena to Florence, Santa Maria Novella station. The first train to Florence leaves Siena at 5am, and the last one at 9.30pm. The average travel time is one hour. Count three hours from Rome, less than two hours from Pisa, and nearly an hour and a half from Grosseto.

The bus company Autolinee Toscana (AT) operates several regular routes in the center of Portoferraio, as well as extra-urban routes: no. 116 (Portoferraio - Marciana Marina - Pomonte - Marina di Campo), no. 117 (Portoferraio - Porto Azzurro - Rio Elba - Rio Marina - Cavo), and no. 118 (Portoferraio - Bagnaia - Lacona) Departures are generally regular, but frankly, it is difficult to rely solely on public transportation to get between the beaches and hotels of the island.

Also located in Marciana Marina and on the Gulf of Mola, this agency offers various services: rental of motor or sailing boats (licence required for some models), day trips, sport fishing... From San Giovanni it is possible to discover the north coast of Elba from the sea in one day. Between the Scoglietto, off Portoferraio, the white cliffs of Sansone, the promontory of Enfola, the bay of Viticcio, the beach of La Biodola and the small islands of Formiche della Zanca, there's something for everyone!

The three ports of arrival on the island of Elba are: Portoferraio, Rio Marina and Cavo. The crossing between Piombino and Portoferraio takes 40 minutes to an hour depending on the boat. Between Piombino and Rio Marina it takes about 45 minutes. Up to four crossings per day in winter, and ten in high season. From Rio Marina, it is also possible to dock on the island of Pianosa: once a day in low season (no more departures in summer), the journey takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes. Between Piombino and Cavo: about 15 minutes.

The Moby shipping company also operates crossings between the port of Piombino, in the province of Livorno, Tuscany, and the three ports of Elba, namely Portoferraio, Cavo and Rio Marina.

A smart plan! Moby and Toremar have teamed up to offer a service that can come in very handy: the free "Parti Prima" package. It allows you to use your ticket purchased from either company and board a ferry before the initial time of your reservation, depending on availability on board.
