Things to see and do Lombardy

Also called "the montagnetta" (the small mountain), this garden was built in 1946 on an artificial hill consisting of the rubble resulting from the bombardment of the city during World war II. Mr. 3 Zara. The upper part of this church is the th century, while its lower part of the Renaissance. Its history is linked to that of Charles d'Amboise, the French governor of Milan. It was he who ordered the construction of a chapel in order to shelter a miraculous fountain, formed by the flow of the waters of a fontanile (see «Geography»). The chapel is covered with frescoes due to a student of Bramante and protected by a long portico.

This medieval tower, which dominates the foundations of a th century Roman palace, is an example of how the lords of the Upper Middle Ages affirmed their authority.

Located in Melegnano, a th century church, superb example of Lombard Gothic, where the remains of a column indicate the whereabouts of the French soldiers.

In the tower of this castle, 800 Swiss soldiers were burned alive by French soldiers. After the defeat of Pavia and before being made prisoner, François I found refuge on a farm in the vicinity where a peasant was cooking soup. According to the use of the time, soups were consumed in a bowl with soaked bread. Intimidated by the high rank of the king and wanting to make beautiful figure, the peasants ran to the chicken hen, took two eggs and broke them directly in hot soup. This was one of the most typical recipes of the region, the pavese pavese, which is still preparing today with hot broth, crusts of dry bread and fresh egg.

Still near Melegnano, you can visit this farm where François I would have established its headquarters.

The church of San Alessandro, renovated in the th century, welcomes in addition to works by Bassano, Romanino, Campin, Cavagnaet Salmeggia, the famous Deposizione of Lorenzo Lotto, one of the most dramatic works of the painter and full of spirituality.
