ROAM BELIZE

Specialized tour operators

Here's a local agency, 100% Belizean, that can help you discover the whole country, but especially the Garifuna area around Dangriga-Hopkins-Placencia: cultural immersion with the Garifunas, Cokscomb Wildlife Sanctuary, Bocawina, horseback riding and more. In short, everything there is to do on land in and around Stann Creek. The agency also offers an efficient car rental service from Dangriga, which is worth noting as there isn't much choice in this area in the town. The nearest agencies are in Hopkins.

BUS STOP

Bus station

It's an understatement to say that Hopkins isn't bursting at the seams with public transport traffic. A bus leaves for Dandriga Monday to Saturday at 7 a.m. and 2 p.m., and only at 2 p.m. on Sundays. If you want to reach Placencia, ask to stop at the intersection of the main road from Dandriga to Punta Gorda; from there, many buses run directly to Placencia or drop you off at Independence to catch the ferry. From Placencia, there is a direct bus to Dandriga via Hopkins at 10.30 am and 5.30 pm. Ask locally for timetables.

BUS STOP

Bus station

Several Ritchie's buses to Dandriga, Belmopan and Belize City leave the village every day by the road that goes up the peninsula and then reaches further along the main north-south axis. The James Linebuses that connect Belize City, Belmopan and Dandriga to Punta Gorda do not take the Peninsula Road but stop at Independence, on the other side of the lagoon: you must then take a ferry to make the short crossing. There is also a direct connection to Dandriga with Bebb Bus Line, which stops at Hopkins twice a day.

HOKEY POKEY BOAT

Shipping company

This is your best chance of reaching Placencia if you don't have a car and don't arrive by plane, as you won't find any direct buses.... What's more, it's the best way to reach the south coast from Placencia by bus, since all buses on the north-south route (Dandriga - Punta Gorda) stop at Independence. For some time now, Hokey Pokey has also been offering connections to Honduras, so it's best to contact the dock to find out about routes and timetables. Beware of seasickness!

On Mondays, the boat returns from Honduras to Belize. The total duration of this boat trip is approximately 3 hours 30 minutes. If you're prone to motion sickness, you might be better off using Tropic Air's regular flights to Honduras.

COROZAL AIRPORT

Airport and passenger services

Corozal airport is anything but a major airport - some would call it an aerodrome - but its location, close to the Mexican border, makes it a good starting point for San Pedro for those who prefer the air to the sea. Tropic Air and Maya Island fly several times a day from Corozal to San Pedro (Ambergris Caye): 25 minutes at the most for a flight that is a journey in itself, as the areas overflown are superb and offer the opportunity to take splendid aerial photos of the reef barrier and the coast.
