Read moreThe bus is the most popular means of transport for Belizeans to get around the country. Most buses leaving Belize City do so from this terminal, located south of Haulover Creek. The main line is Blue Bird, which serves all the district capitals and most important towns in the country; from dawn to dusk, many other companies criss-cross the country. Go to the terminal one hour before your bus leaves to make sure you get a seat. Keep an eye on your luggage.

Read moreIt's an understatement to say that Hopkins isn't bursting at the seams with public transport traffic. A bus leaves for Dandriga Monday to Saturday at 7 a.m. and 2 p.m., and only at 2 p.m. on Sundays. If you want to reach Placencia, ask to stop at the intersection of the main road from Dandriga to Punta Gorda; from there, many buses run directly to Placencia or drop you off at Independence to catch the ferry. From Placencia, there is a direct bus to Dandriga via Hopkins at 10.30 am and 5.30 pm. Ask locally for timetables.

Read moreSeveral Ritchie's buses to Dandriga, Belmopan and Belize City leave the village every day by the road that goes up the peninsula and then reaches further along the main north-south axis. The James Linebuses that connect Belize City, Belmopan and Dandriga to Punta Gorda do not take the Peninsula Road but stop at Independence, on the other side of the lagoon: you must then take a ferry to make the short crossing. There is also a direct connection to Dandriga with Bebb Bus Line, which stops at Hopkins twice a day.

What's more, it's the best way to reach the south coast from Placencia by bus, since all buses on the north-south route (Dandriga - Punta Gorda) stop at Independence. For some time now, Hokey Pokey has also been offering connections to Honduras, so it's best to contact the dock to find out about routes and timetables. Beware of seasickness!
D'EXPRESS BOAT
Read moreThe easiest way to reach Honduras, then Nicaragua and Panama by road. The ferry (that's a big word for this little boat) leaves Placencia every Friday for Puerto Cortes in Honduras. On Mondays, the boat returns from Honduras to Belize. The total duration of this boat trip is approximately 3 hours 30 minutes. If you're prone to motion sickness, you might be better off using Tropic Air's regular flights to Honduras.

For Hopkins, there is a direct service Monday to Saturday at 10.15 a.m. and 5.15 p.m.; Sundays only at 5.15 p.m. For Placencia, there's a Ritchi'es bus that takes the Peninsula route (so you don't have to take the ferry from Independence): departures at 11am, 2pm, 4:30pm and 6:15pm. Make sure you get all the information you need to avoid untimely changes.

Read moreThe Mexican company has set up a small ticket office at the local bus station. This opens about two hours before the buses leave, and tickets can be purchased several days in advance. After a three-year interruption, the service resumed in July 2023 and is now operating normally again. The bus stops in Chetumal before leaving Belize, and in Bacalar, Tulum and Playa del Carmen once in Mexico. A great way to discover the Yucatan coast at lower cost, while enjoying the scenery along the way.

Please note that the Express service departs Punta Gorda at 4am, 6am and 3pm and Belize City at 5.15am, 12.15pm and 3.45pm. The buses are in excellent condition, and the drivers are careful and punctual, guaranteeing a worry-free journey.

You may have to wait a while for enough passengers to make the trip, or compensate for their absence by paying a few extra dollars. The service is professional and fairly well organized, and most of the captains are from the same family and have known each other all their lives, so you're guaranteed to help each other out if there's a problem starting up the boats.
