The Handley Page HP42 biplane, Imperial Airways flight IE184 London-Karachi landed in Sharjah on October 7, 1932 after six days of hazardous navigation from England. Today, the airport is a small hub whose transcontinental ambitions are embodied by Air Arabia.

Since Rak Airways suspended commercial operations at the end of 2013, Air Arabia has had the monopoly. There are direct flights to Cairo, Muscat, Doha, Jeddah as well as major cities in Pakistan and Bangladesh. In high season, it is not uncommon to see charter flights arriving from Eastern Europe.
