Budget & Tips
Generally speaking, you should be aware that prices have been rising steadily over the last few years, and that prices change fast! Even for the many establishments selected in this guide.
The hotel VAT rate is 7%. A tourist tax must also be added, which generally amounts to 500 Kr per night. Here are some examples of summer rates (accommodation prices drop in the off-season):
Small budget: nights in a refuge, camping orsleeping bag accommodation are the most affordable. Rates for FERÐAFÉLAG ÍSLANDS accommodation start at 3,800 Kr per night for camping, and from 10,000 Kr for a night in a refuge. Light meals (picnics) and travel by bus or hitchhiking. In short, simple tourism with strict cost control!
Average budget: from 20,000 to 30,000 Kr double room in a pension (often with shared bathroom) or on a farm. Frequent bus transport (package deals) and a few extras for meals..
Big budget: from 30,000 Kr to much, much more...: hotel room, with bathroom, car rental, restaurants, activities, etc.
On Black Friday, some booking platforms like Booking offer discounts and special offers for several nights.
To be booked
If you're planning a trip in July-August, it's best to book several months in advance. Especially when it comes to accommodation, the earlier you book, the more choice you'll have. Although its popularity is growing, Iceland becomes quieter from a tourism point of view from October onwards. You'll need to book much less in advance, but many establishments only open in high season.
What's very local
Many establishmentsoffer sleeping bag accommodation, where you sleep in a bed and bring your own comforter for a lower price.
Always check if the bathroom is private! This is by no means the norm here, and many accommodations have shared bathrooms.
Many accommodations offer saunas or hot tubs, without necessarily being more expensive than those without.
For food lovers
Breakfasts are often included, some traditional (ham, jam, bread, cheese, raw vegetables and sometimes fish) or served as a continental buffet. Coffee is sometimes available free of charge.
