SABORES DAS MALTEZAS

Tapas bar €€
4/5
1 review

Located in the center of town, overlooking the Place do Gadanha, this excellent restaurant offers a varied menu with homemade recipes. Sabores das Maltezas also sells quality regional products, including wines, liqueurs, honey and cheeses. Among the specialties are several sure-fire favourites: carne à l'Alentejana, carne de porco ibérico and tapas. The plates are well presented and tempting, with the town of Estremoz in the spotlight. On request, the restaurant can organize events and provide catering services. A picturesque and welcoming address.

JIMÃO TAPAS E VINHOS

Tapas bar
4.8/5
11 reviews

Jimão Tapas e Vinhos offers Mediterranean cuisine. As its name suggests, this restaurant serves mainly Spanish tapas with Portuguese flavours, as well as carefully selected wine from the Douro Valley or vinho verde. On the menu, in addition to the cold and hot tapas presented with care: soups, vegetarian dishes such as risotto, bacalhau (cod), arroz de polvo... The name Jimão means "dried Iberian ham" in Spanish. Also good desserts. Impeccable service, friendly atmosphere. A good address.

RESTAURANTE NOVO PARIS

Restaurant or takeaway
5/5
2 reviews

Sheltered from the tourists, this small local bar, which is not at all reminiscent of the new Paris, serves a typical cuisine at unbeatable prices. Grilled squid, octopus, sardines: only seafood products to satisfy all stomachs. It's quality at the right price! At noon, the local workers meet there to have lunch on the go. Also some quality wines to accompany your dish, preferably white, but let the waiters guide you. Friendly atmosphere that mixes tourists and locals.

MERCEARIA DA VILA

An old haberdashery with windows filled with antiques and old newspapers. On display among the pretty cakes, we were seduced by the chocolate one. The house also offers small dishes. Perfect for a gourmet break. For tea lovers, the range is wide. Moreover, the house rents elegant rooms on the first floor at a good price, they are very pleasant and well decorated. Each of them is named after a condiment, spice or sweet such as the sugar room or the green tea room. Don't hesitate to take a look at them!

O CORVO

Cafeteria
5/5

This café/restaurant is only for the most adventurous who dare to go into the narrow streets of the Mouraria. O Corvo is the perfect place to meet up with friends or to come with your book and spend the afternoon. On the menu there is something for everyone, from focaccia to burgers and a wide selection of salads. There are also cheese and charcuterie tables and dishes to share if you just want a bite to eat. For early risers, there are two versions of brunch, a classic and a healthier one.

SEMPRE QUENTE

Located on a street behind the main road, this tea/coffee room is an immediate eye-catcher. The decoration is modern and in the spirit of the times with its petrol blue walls and white earthenware tiles. A few tables outside to enjoy the sunny weather, a counter top table in the window with high stools. Inside, a counter offering a wide choice of pastries, quiches, wraps... We don't know what to choose anymore! If you stay there for a while, you can see the customers who come to buy bread.

CAFETERIA DE LA FUNDAÇÃO CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN

Cafeteria
4.5/5

The cafeteria is in two parts, located in different places: one associated with the Foundation's building and a self-service area in the Museum of Modern Art. In the self-service restaurant, you will find a buffet of appetizers and salads in addition to pastries, as well as a wide variety of good daily specials and desserts at very competitive prices. All these good reasons mean that you will be queuing up at times that coincide with the lunch break at the neighbourhood offices. A good address.

This French bakery is now located in a small street overlooking the square opposite the entrance to the Museo d'Arte Antiga (rua da Janelas Verdes). Don't let the name fool you, this is not a traditional French bakery. You'll find French baguettes and viennoiseries, but it also serves hearty breakfasts from 8am, lunches and brunches all day long. The menu has recently been revamped, with açaí bowls for those who prefer lighter breakfasts.

Fancy a pizza that tastes like Italy? Despite the growing number of pizzerias in Lisbon, this one remains among the best and most famous. It has moved from a street in Alfama to the modern part of the city. The principle remains the same and so does the menu. The space, however, is much bigger and there are even some tables outside. It is open one more day as a bonus, what more could you ask for? We tested the 4 cheeses and we adhere, the pastry is crunchy and tasty, no doubt it is home made..

LEITARIA ACADÉMICA

Formerly Casa do Carmo, this pretty old-fashioned pastry shop (it dates from 1787!), made entirely of stucco and chromos, in the no less beautiful Carmo square, was frequented by Fernando Pessoa. Ideal for a break after climbing the Chiado hill, while enjoying the atmosphere of the square. A friendly place, in summer and winter alike, overrun by students from the nearby school. This reinforces the village atmosphere, which is very relaxing after shopping. Perfect for a sandwich or a sweetness; the dishes are not too expensive, especially indoors.

PASTELARIA MEXICANA

Restaurant or takeaway
4/5
1 review

Near the praça de Londres, designed in 1946, the Arty house is still managed by the same family today. Completely remodelled in 1962, the particularity of this pastelaria-restaurant lies in its very colourful interior coverings, supported by a wall clock surrounded by geometric motifs and a ceramic panel signed by master Querubim Lapa. In the basement, the restaurant serves duck water or cod lagarada... In addition to enjoying the space, for its outdated beauty, you will also enjoy its terrace.

CACAU DA RIBEIRA

A typical Lisbon address, inside the Time out Market, with a view on fruits and vegetables. You can eat traditional dishes of the day such as sea bream. The walls are filled with azulejos, with matching tablecloths, in yellow and blue, and a large brick bar. Special feature: the house is open all night long, so you can come and have a bite to eat at any time. Recently the opinions have become mixed on the quality of the dishes served. The address is probably a victim of the success of the market, which is always full. It is necessary to hang on to have a place.

SUNSET BAMBOO BAR

Sunset Bamboo Bar boasts the largest tostas (XXL tostas) and it's true! You'll have a hard time dealing with it on your own. Unless you have an ogre's appetite or are at least two to share, we advise you to order only one half. We wonder where they get the bread to get such large slices. To refresh yourself, you can choose fresh fruit juices such as guava or mango or detox juice. Otherwise, you will also find pancakes, açaí bowls...

VOLTA & MEIA

Fusion restaurant and international cuisine
4/5
1 review

The owners' aim was to create a space for socializing. Restaurant, tapas bar, tea room and bistro, Volta & Meia is all at once: a young, friendly and original address where you'll feel right at home. The wood-panelled decor is quite simple, except for the bar, and the owner offers a warm welcome and excellent advice. You can eat very well for very little money (the weekly menu is written on post-it notes with the drawing of the hand-made dish). Everything is homemade, and the plates are copious and delicious! Wine by the glass. The courtyard is great for sunny days.

PÃO DA VILA

Cafeteria

This pastry shop, which also serves as a cafeteria, is a great option for lunch or dinner at any time of the day. It will also be your best option when the other restaurants are closed. There are several addresses in Ericeira, but we recommend the one overlooking the square with its terrace. On the menu you will have all the traditional snacks, sandwiches but also dishes or salads. Everything is very good with very reasonable prices. The team will welcome you warmly and the service is impeccable.

SAND BAR BY REVERSE

Takeaway food

At the exit of the tunnel linking the station to Estoril's Tamariz beach, you'll find this little bar (also known as O Bar do Tunel), offering snacks, drinks and artisanal ice creams. It's the perfect place to refuel before heading for the fine sand. The decor is rather trendy and stands out from the small shops opposite. The bar has recently been taken over by the Reverse group, which also has a beach lounge where you can rent deckchairs, as well as a restaurant with swimming pool right next to the beach.

This chain, which also operates in Lisbon, is a great place for a snack break or a quick lunch. The concept is simple: filled croissants with a wide selection of toppings. Choose from sweet or savoury options! Because yes, in Portugal, the croissant is an option for a savory sandwich... The croissants are baked throughout the day, so they're always fresh and crisp.

ALDEIA DA PRAIA

Takeaway food

Located in a former vacation camp, this site, lost in the middle of the maritime pines and very close to the sea, brings together a range of services: accommodation, coworking, bars and food-trucks, as well as a wellness and treatment area. You could live here in autarky for quite some time, especially as there's also a grocery store for everyday shopping. Concerts and other events are organized at weekends, thanks in particular to MUSA (Lisbon's own craft brewery), which initiates quite a few things.

THE BAKERY LOUNGE

Spreadery

We love the uncluttered ambience of this seemingly small coffee-shop, which hides a discreet terrace where students love to take refuge. The large wooden tables are conducive to sharing and conviviality. On the menu: vitamin-packed bowls, toast and bruschetta with freshly squeezed juice, and pastries to choose from in the window. No less than six full breakfasts are also available. As you'd expect, the emphasis here is on fresh, homemade, good and healthy food. To eat in or take away.
