How to get there - Budapest

Arrival in Hungary

In Hungarian history

Steps: Budapest

Start with Budapest's Royal Castle, a witness to Hungarian history: built in the 13th century under the Arpadian dynasty, it was completely destroyed and rebuilt after the Second World War. Today, you can visit the Budapest History Museum and admire works of medieval religious art at the Hungarian National Gallery, housed in the former castle building. Don't forget to walk down to the Várkert bazár, the fantastic buildings and gardens designed by Miklós Ybl in the late 19th century.

Places of interest : GALERIE NATIONALE (MAGYAR NEMZETI GALÉRIA) MUSÉE D'HISTOIRE (BUDAPESTI TÖRTÉNETI MÚZEUM) PALAIS DE BUDAVÁR (BUDAVÁRI PALOTA) BAZAR DU CHÂTEAU (VÁRKERT BAZÁR)

Renaissance Palace of King Mathias

Basilique d'Esztergom.

Steps: Visegrád

Not far from the capital, transport yourself to Visegrád, the seat of royal power in the days of the Anjou. After discovering the ruins of the citadel and the Renaissance palace of King Mathias, climb to the top for a panoramic view, 360° on the curve of the Danube.

Places of interest : PALAIS ROYAL (MÁTYÁS KIRÁLY MÚZEUMA)

Medieval castles

Château des Brunswick, musée Beethoven.

Steps: Esztergom

Continue along the Danube loop to reach Hungary's first capital. Esztergom and its medieval royal palace, whose remains date back to the 12th century. The neoclassical Basilica of Esztergom, with its dome supported by no fewer than 24 columns, is the largest religious building in Hungary, and the fourth largest in the world.

Places of interest : BASILIQUE D'ESZTERGOM (BAZILIKA)

The Brunswick home

Veszprém.

Steps: Martonvásár

In Northern Transdanubia, follow in the footsteps of the great Beethoven to Martonvásár. This small town is home to the Brunswick family, a small neo-Gothic castle where the Austrian composer, a friend of the Brunswick family, loved to visit. In the splendid Lake Balaton region, visit Székesfehérvár, known as Alba Regia in Roman times. As well as being the country's oldest city, it was the site of the coronation of Hungarian kings for centuries. From here, take in the stunningly romantic Bory Castle (Bory-vár). You can also visit Fehérvárcsurgó Castle, where you can choose to stay.

Places of interest : CHÂTEAU BORY (BORY-VÁR) CHÂTEAU KÁROLYI (KÁROLYI KASTÉLY) CHÂTEAU DES BRUNSWICK - MUSÉE BEETHOVEN

Residence of the Hungarian queens

Vue sur la ville d'Eger.

Steps: Sümeg

Continue on to the former county of Veszprém, residence of the Hungarian queens and home to the remains of some twenty castles. These include the town of Nagyvázsony and its medieval castle, which a miller (Kinizsi) knighted for his services to the king transformed into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century. Then on to the small town of Sümeg to admire its superbly restored fortress. Explore the capital of the Lake Balaton region and the Baroque castle of the Festetics dynasty in Keszthely, a benchmark of luxury and cultural influence in 18th- and 19th-century Europe.

Visit Szigetvár, a place steeped in history. Its ancestors and fortresses are famous for their heroic resistance to the siege of Suleiman the Magnificent's men in 1566. The sultan died here, and the valiant Hungarians of this unyielding village preserved Europe from Turkish domination.
