ESZTERGOM BASILICA (BAZILIKA)
A remarkable basilica in Esztergom, one of the largest religious buildings in the world, housing a fine collection of sacred art.
The Basilica of Esztergom, whose official name is Nagyboldogasszony és Szent Adalbert-főszékesegyház, is one of the world's largest religious buildings. Its height, from the crypt to the top of the cross, reaches 100 m. After the demolition of the remains of the old St. Adalbert Cathedral, the foundation stone for the new basilica was laid in 1822. After several interruptions caused by the death of the archbishop and then of the building inspector, the basilica was consecrated in 1856 (although construction was far from complete). For this ceremony, Franz Liszt conducted the mass he had composed.
The basilica's Bakócz chapel, made of red Süttő marble, is one of the most remarkable examples of Hungarian Renaissance architecture.
The basilica's treasury (Kincstár) constitutes the country's largest collection of sacred art. One of its most remarkable pieces is the Calvary of King Mátyás, a veritable masterpiece of goldsmithery. Among the magnificently crafted chalices is the Suki chalice, dating from 1440. The treasure also includes pectoral crosses of extraordinary size and Baroque richness. In a display case is King Sigismund's drinking horn, a large 70 cm high buffalo horn set in chased gold.
The basilica has been undergoing renovation since the end of 2019. Since then, various parts of the basilica have been either accessible or inaccessible...
