When to go en Charente-Maritime ?
If the department sees thousands of tourists flocking to it every summer, it remains welcoming all year round. Benefiting from a generous amount of sunshine, Charente-Maritime is as pleasant in spring as in autumn! Take a walk, have a coffee on the port... you will enjoy wide open spaces and lower prices. In winter, if the days are shorter, the activities are numerous and will not fail to satisfy history lovers, sportsmen and gourmets.
The climate of the Charente-Maritime is a temperate oceanic climate with an average amount of sunshine. As far as the weather is concerned, there is a certain contrast between the coastline, which is quite dry, and the interior, which is a little rainier and colder. In winter, Cognac can count 40 days of frost while La Rochelle counts only 23 over the same period. On the islands and the coast the climate is almost Mediterranean. In Charente-Maritime, temperatures vary on average from + 5 °C in winter to + 20 °C in summer.
When to go to Charente-Maritime? On the coast and on the islands, the best period is of course summer. Inland and in cities like La Rochelle, Royan or Rochefort, you can come and visit all year round. In the high season prices soar and tourists are mainly concentrated in the seaside towns or on the islands of Ré and Oléron. Late spring and early autumn are ideal times to enjoy not only the beach, but also the ease of traffic and parking and more reasonable prices. The Charente-Maritime region has a number of beautiful festivals. The most publicized is without a doubt the Francofolies de La Rochelle festival which takes place around July 14th. It mixes popular and alternative music, shows for young people and discovery of young talents. In February, the Printemps musical en Ré is a chamber music festival that opens the Saisons musicales en Ré season. The Festival des Cerfs-volants in Châtelaillon-Plage, which takes place at the end of April, attracts children as well as their parents. The show is everywhere with kit-jumpers and their impressive figures, the aerobatic team of the Air Force, without forgetting the night flight staged with sound and light. In mid-June, Music and Gastronomy of the World in Saint-Georges-de-Didonne invites you to travel to the heart of the varied sounds and perfumes of the planet. In mid-July, the Saintes festival is an international classical music festival, mainly dedicated to Bach. At the end of September-beginning of October, the Grand Pavois is for the lovers of boating with each year a guest of honor and hundreds of exhibitors.
