More than 80 kilometres. It is the length of the canal Louis XIV wanted to create to feed Versailles with the waters of the Eure. This pharaoh project, several remains remaining in Eure-et-Loir, had to take its source in the commune of Pontgouin. It is in this area, somewhere in the forest surrounding the village, on the edge of the Boizard pond, that you can see the locks intended to regulate the flow of the river by creating water restraint in the valley. Seven other locations, between Pontgouin and Maintenon, were identified as crossing points of the unfinished Louis XIV Canal

COURTYARD CASTLE

Castles to visit

Originally, the castle depended on the county of Chartres. One can think that it was rebuilt in the years 1530-1550 instead of a medieval fortress, for Jacques d'Avaugour. Thereafter, the Montmorency were the owners. Courtalain was transmitted by inheritance in 1862 to the Gontaut-Biron family who is still the owner. In this exceptional setting, a beautiful 29 th-century orangerie welcomes a conference and meeting area as well as a hotel with rooms. Single, double, triple or quadruple rooms, from 88 € per night for a double room. The atmosphere is authentic and friendly. A suite in the castle for 190 € at night. 8 € breakfast per person. Houses furnished with 3 rooms for five people, kitchen corner for 160 € on weekends. Swimming pool, large park, ping-pong, mini-golf, fishing for activities.

THE CASTLE AND THE CHURCH

Castles to visit

Only a moat separates the castle of the Saint-Lubin church. The buildings and the park that stretches behind were built between the th and th centuries. Following an unusual architecture in the region, the church presents a series of stained glass windows telling the story of Saint Lubin, the former bishop of Chartres. By entering the gardens of the castle, the surprise continues with canals, where Coule flows, separating the grassland from the building. Bridges regularly allow crossing the river. This pivot mill, typically beauce, dates back to 1796. It is also called "Moulin Pelard": four generations of Pelard worked there for 150 years. The first work is destroyed by a storm and it has therefore been completely restored after destruction. You'll see how wheat turns into flour. In June, at the time of Small Heritage Day, and in September, the association brings a bread oven on site and produces old bread.

Contact the Chevallier-Debeausse Foundation for permission to enter the property. With entry, it is the only remaining remnant of the feudal castle. It is a circular dungeon well characterized by its defensive aspect. But we could also live there, witness inner rooms arched on warheads that include chimneys and windows. The chapel Saint-Nicolas of the castle and the church Notre-Dame were covered with frescoes under the impetus of Florimond Robertet, Treasurer of France and Secretary of Finance under François I, when he bought the castle in 1505 and began to restore it. The fortress of Bois Ruffin, located in the countryside of the Beauce dunoise between Arrou and Chapelle-Royale, blends the defensive walls of the upper Middle Ages and the plush farmhouses of the modern era.
