THE CHÂTEAU TURPAULT

Castles to visit
4.2/5
6 reviews

The castle of the sea, as it was called before the Quiberonnais rebaptisent the castle of Turpault, is like the emblem of the city. It remains fantastic, reminiscent of the medieval era and of English influence, was built in the early th century. Open on the whole of the wild coast, it is a pure jewel of which you have to come and admire the architecture and the foot of the Pointe-er-Lann to which she adds a little majesty and a fantastic tone. You can only get close to the castle that remains private property, but it's enough to admire beauty and let yourself be overwhelmed by the atmosphere that it radiates. The owners of the premises have long opened the door to the commune so that fireworks are organised there, but this may be a subject of change due to the sale of the castle in the course of 2010. History does not tell if the castle has found buyer and if so which… As an anecdote, it was said that in 2007 Johnny Halliday and his wife Laetitia would have liked to buy it but not being sold at the time, would not have been able to buy it!

THE HEART OF THE SMALL CITY OF CHARACTER

Street square and neighborhood to visit
4/5
3 reviews

It is a beautiful illustration of Josselin's prosperous trading period. Most of the houses date from the 16th century and have retained the appearance they had at that time. Take time to stroll around to admire the wooden sections and sculptures restored by the latest restorations, with the exception of the house known as the House of the Seneschal, right next to the basilica. This beautiful 18th century house was home to one of the most famous Republican leaders, General Hoche, during his visit to Josselin in 1795.

THE CALVARY

Religious buildings
4/5
2 reviews

This monument is one of the most beautiful samples of cross-panels, calvaries carved on its four sides, typical of this part of Brittany. It has three floors of sculptures. On the north-south base, six scenes from Christ's life are displayed (the arrest of Christ or the kiss of Judas, flogging, cross-bearing, crucifixion, descent to Hell and Ascension) and on the barrel you will discover four motifs representing Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint John the Baptist and Saint James. This calvary would be the only one in Brittany to symbolize the passion and Ascension of Christ. The nearby church is open during the day.

SAINT MICHAEL'S CHAPEL

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels
4/5
2 reviews

Located on the former fairground and the current Place Saint-Michel, this chapel is a 17th century work renovated at the beginning of the 20th century. Its location, under the foliage of trees, contributes greatly to its charm. Among the curiosities is a bell dated 1670, where an annual pardon is celebrated every August 15. It can no longer be visited today, but its surroundings are very pleasant.
