PARC NATIONAL DE LA VANOISE

Natural site to discover
5/5

Created in 1963, the National National Park was the first French. He continued the Italian Gran Paradiso, located across the border. A National Park whose vocation is to protect the natural heritage, the environment, today takes into account cultural heritage and landscapes. 28 municipalities and its area are over 145 000 hectares. It has 14 common kilometres of the National Park of Gran Paradiso (Italy) with which it has been twinned since. 1972). The National National Park is situated between the high valleys of Maurienne and Tarentaise. With its high peaks (more than 3 000 m high), it still has many glaciers, which nevertheless shrink. The Park encompasses 70% of Pralognan-la-Vanoise.

This park was born of the discovery of the progressive disappearance of the Alps and chamois. Today, these two animals once again colonized the steep slopes and slide of the Vanoise. For them, it is the largest Colony in France. You can see them by being attentive, silent and respecting them, especially when they ruminent. They have to make a lot of fat quickly to spend the rough winters in the snow. The more fearful buff fled to our approach, unlike the bouquetin of the Alps.

Other animals to observe such as marmots, variables, foxes, hermines, badgers… 120 bird species nest in Vanoise, like bats, bearded bearded (3 breeding pairs), royal eagles (about pairs), Grouse… and a hundred species of insects.

On the flora, 1 200 plant species identified, 200 of which are remarkable or endemic, and some protected, such as the Alpes of the Alps, the @ sedge, the blue thistle…

The Vanoise National Park offers many free or controlled activities. We remind you of the specific regulations of a National Park: no dog, respect the trails, no camping, no fires, no cueillette or mineral, no mountain bikes out indicated…

PARC NATUREL RÉGIONAL DU VERCORS

PARC NATUREL RÉGIONAL DU VERCORS

Natural site to discover

A land of wild nature with remarkable biodiversity but also a land of history and discovery, the Vercors Regional Nature Park, between Isère and Drôme, covers an exceptional territory of almost 26,000 hectares. It is divided into eight regions: the Quatre-Montagnes, the Coulmes, the Vercors drômois, the Royans, the Diois, the Trièves, the Gervanne and the Piémont Nord. The Vercors Regional Nature Park is home to the largest reserve in mainland France and 4,600 km of hiking trails. The practice of outdoor sports is therefore possible in all 4 seasons, offering an exceptional setting to hikers. On its surface, you will discover wooded plateaus, majestic cirques, a profusion of wild fauna and flora and in its entrails, gaping chasms, deep gorges and magnificent caves. From the lavender of Provence in the south to the snowy summits of the north, the Vercors is a land of contrasts. A citadel carved out of the limestone rock, the Vercors has long been preserved from intense human activity. However, its 53,000 inhabitants living in 85 communes live in harmony with nature and have developed on its territory an agricultural and local production activity, let's recall for this purpose the obtaining of the AOP Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage. In the heart of this vast region, whose tragic history cannot be ignored, we must first distinguish the 16,600 hectares of the Hauts Plateaux Nature Reserve, the largest nature reserve in mainland France, a totally protected area where nature is at its best. In this reserve, there are no houses and no roads, but a preserved fauna and flora, in the heart of a territory of mountain pastures, forests and cliffs. You can find the largest forest of hooked pines in the limestone Alps, but also many mountain mammals such as the ibex, the mouflon, the chamois or the marmot. The Hauts Plateaux Nature Reserve is also a place to observe the vulture. In total, there are nearly 80 protected plant species in the Vercors Natural Park. During your walks in the forest, you will be able to see, for example, the Venus hoof, a pretty plant of the orchid family. In the cliffs, you will also notice auricular primroses and, in the subalpine grasses, wild tulips. The Vercors massif is also home to 135 species of breeding birds, 65 species of mammals and 17 species of reptiles and amphibians! Among them: ibex, deer, golden eagles, peregrine falcons and marmots. You can also meet in the Vercors chamois, deer, roe deer, mouflons, ibex and even wild boars. It is thanks to its great variety of ecosystems that the Vercors manages to maintain such a beautiful biodiversity: mountain fauna, cliffs, and even Mediterranean species will find here a natural habitat of choice. The limestone massif of the Vercors is also a paradise for cavers: the Berger chasm, located in the north of the massif, is world famous. This set of karstic cavities, whose waters are in correspondence with the tanks of Sassenage, was discovered in 1953. Another highlight of the Vercors Regional Nature Park is the Choranche caves where even non-specialists of underground galleries can enjoy the beauties hidden under our feet. The visit is a beautiful journey to the heart of the Earth. Of this sumptuous massif, one should not forget the Royans which spreads its agrarian opulence between the course of the Isère and the first slopes of the Vercors without leaving the spectacular, in particular thanks to the cliffs which plunge of several hundreds of meters in Combe-Laval and in Grands-Goulets. This position of natural fortress also allowed men, and in particular the maquisards in fight against the occupant, to find refuge in the innumerable caves and the unfathomable forests. The martyred villages are a reminder of the battles that took place in these peaceful places. Among them, the village of Vassieux-en-Vercors and its memorial of the Resistance which are in the center of a route of discovery of the sites where the tragic events of the Vercors took place, during the summer 1944. A place of memory if ever there was one, the memorial allows you to discover the daily life of the maquisards, the historical events but also the different strategies and ideologies. A natural citadel, the Vercors offers a few peaks that exceed 2,000 meters in altitude, including the Grand Veymont, the highest point of the massif at 2,341 meters, without forgetting the very photogenic Mont Aiguille. A mountain that is not admirable for its height, 2,085 meters, but for its particular shape of isolated tooth - one could compare it to a molar -, a summit plateau surrounded by impressive cliffs. Impressive, like the needles of Dévoluy, a crystalline mass that seems detached from its forest base. Here is a region which you should not miss to discover landscapes mixing striking contrasts and plenitude, nature and history. Please note that the Maison du Parc in Lans-en-Vercors is not open to the public. You can find all the information you need in the tourist offices of the area.

VIEUX LYON (OLD CITY)

Street square and neighborhood to visit
4.7/5
60 reviews

Vieux Lyon" does not refer to the oldest district of the city. Lugdunum began its history on the heights of Fourvière rather than on the banks of the Saône. Vieux Lyon refers to the Renaissance district of the city, saved from a promised destruction by becoming the first safeguarded sector of France by André Malraux in 1964, classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO. The Old Lyon is quite clearly delimited by the Fourvière hill which overhangs it, the Saône river which runs alongside it, the montée de Choulans to the south and the rue Saint-Paul to the north. The quays offer a pleasant walk with many festive bars which animate the district at night.

Saint-Georges. From Bellecour, take the Saint-Georges footbridge to reach the church. In the 14th century, the Order of Malta settled in the Commanderie de Saint-Georges and the church, whose name pays tribute to the martyr George of Lydda, became a sanctuary. The original church threatened to collapse in the 19th century and was demolished in 1844 to be replaced by one of the first works of Pierre Marie Bossan, the future architect of the Notre-Dame-de-Fourvière basilica. Renovated about fifteen years ago, it fits perfectly into the ensemble of Old Lyon. In less renovated streets, you should discover the Place de la Trinité, a crossroads of typical streets of the district, including the famous montée du Gourguillon towards Fourvière. This place owes its fame to the Maison du Soleil, traditionally used as a set for the Guignol puppets. Moreover, the House of Guignol is on the other side of the square and a street called Mourguet perpetuates the memory of the creator of the famous puppet. The street Tramassac makes the link with the district of Saint-Jean.

Saint-Jean. Saint-Jean really starts when you arrive in front of the impressive primatial. Also look behind you to contemplate Fourvière from below. By continuing in the most touristic district of Lyon, the curiosities follow one another: the traboules, the superb Renaissance residences: House of the Lawyers, House of the Chamarier, Gadagne Museum... You will be amazed, especially if you push a few doors! And yet, for a long time, this district was the worst in Lyon and was almost destroyed in the 1960s by Mayor Louis Pradel before being protected by the Malraux law and renovated to welcome tourists from all over the world who stop to eat on the terraces (a tip: discover the best addresses in Vieux Lyon in your Petit Futé or you'll be disappointed...). With its cobbled streets closed to traffic, its admirable Renaissance houses, its Italian airs and its remarkable buildings - including the unavoidable Primatiale des Gaules, the Palais de Justice, the Tour Rose, Gadagne, the Temple du Change, the Maison Thomassin... -saint-Jean offers a jump in time. For the Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral, which alone deserves a column in our guide, see the article devoted to it in this Petit Futé. The visit of the district is essentially done by the two axes that are the rue Saint-Jean and the rue du Boeuf which owes its name to a statue of an ox, in fact a bull, installed in a niche at the corner of the place Neuve. Among the remarkable sites: the Cour des Loges - a magnificent architectural ensemble of 4 Renaissance buildings which today houses a luxurious hotel and a starred restaurant -, the Maison du Crible which houses the famous "pink tower", one of the emblems of Old Lyon. By the way, did you know that the rue du Boeuf was the street with the most starred restaurants in France (three in total) and an astonishing Food Traboule which alone is worth a gourmet visit? The Place Neuve Saint-Jean, invaded by terraces of restaurants of another kind, allows to make the link with the Saint-Jean street. After the place du Petit Collège, we go through the rue Gadagne (Museum of History of Lyon and Museum of Marionette Arts) towards the rue du Loge. After a stop on the Place du Change where you can admire one of the oldest houses in Lyon, the Maison Thomassin, visitors head back south along Rue Saint-Jean where traboules and admirable residences follow one another: Maison Laurencin, Maison du Chamarier, Maison de Jean Gay and Maison des Avocats whose elegant Italian Renaissance-style arcades can be seen from Rue de la Bombarde. On your way back to the cathedral, push the door of n° 54 to go through the longest and most beautiful traboule of Vieux Lyon which allows you to cross 4 houses to reach the rue du Boeuf at n° 27.

Saint-Paul. Like the other districts of Vieux Lyon, Saint-Paul is organized around its church, one of the oldest in Lyon, since the 12th century, but also, and this is more original, around its train station. In the Middle Ages, the neighborhood became a refuge for Jewish families expelled in the 14th century. Rue Juiverie still recalls this period of history and is one of the best preserved, most authentic streets in Old Lyon. Rich bankers and consular families of the city settled in rich residences with the famous House of the Heads of Lions formerly inhabited by the Medicis and at n° 8 the splendid gallery realized by Philibert Delorme, a whole giving airs of opulence to this district formerly well served by the port Saint-Paul and today by a station TER.
