Bannay faces Cosne-sur-Loire. Stone axes were found on its territory, testifying to a human presence 35,000 years ago. At the beginning of our era, the Romans settled along the Loire River. Appreciating the ablutions, they made the site a place of pleasure, hence its name Balneacum - seaside town - transformed in the 17th century into Bannay. The stopover allows you to discover the Saint-Julien church (1480-1781) with its two pepperbox towers and the elm tree planted in 1790 which is located opposite. Many hiking trails and the Loire by bike circuit allow you to discover the surrounding countryside as well as old mills along the Belaine. The Port-Aubry viaduct, which is one of the longest railway lattice bridges in France, also crosses the Loire and connects the commune of Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire (in the Nièvre region) to that of Bannay. The structure was built by the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans, hence its local nickname "pont du P.-O.".
