"Knowing, understanding, managing and respecting the sea" are the key words at Marinarium.

At the end of the quay that runs along the Ville Close, just after the Marina, the Marinarium overlooks the sea. Created in 1859 by Professor Coste, the marine biology station of Concarneau is the oldest in the world. In 2019, it celebrated its 160th anniversary! Modernized in 2002, this structure is the property of the Museum of Natural History and attracts the greatest specialists in marine life. The research of the Concarneau station focuses more specifically on the impact of ocean acidification on the physiology of organisms, but also on the reproduction, dispersion and geographical distribution of all marine species. "Knowing, understanding, managing the sea and better respecting it" are the key words of the Marinarium. Open to the public, everything is explained in a simple, playful and pleasant way through animations, but also through regularly organized excursions. The importance of the oceans and their extraordinary biodiversity, the world of plankton, the immense wealth of the coastline, or the management of marine resources are illustrated by walls of images and aquariums. Let's also mention the educational room where the nursery is located... The space retracing the history of the station, the conference room and the store are freely accessible: a good way to discover the place. And every year there is a temporary exhibition, the next one is entitled Ocean, an unusual dive highlighting the harmful effects of human activity on the marine environment.
