The Château de Dinan is the centerpiece of the medieval enclosure. A fine example of a 14th-century princely residence.
The centerpiece of the medieval city walls, the Château de Dinan is a fine example of a late 14th-century princely residence. Beneath its medieval keep appearance, it is in fact a veritable palace. It was built between 1380 and 1390 by Jean IV, Duke of Brittany, who wished to assert his power after several years of exile in England. The building was fortified in the 16th century, during the turbulent Wars of Religion. Neglected during the 17th century, it was transformed in the following century into a prison for English soldiers and sailors captured by the French fleet, and then into a common law prison after the Revolution. In 1906, it was bought by the town to house an eclectic museum. In recent years, the château has been the subject of a vast enhancement project: it now offers visitors an immersion into the 14th and 15th centuries, with a particular focus on the art of warfare and the daily life of princely residences of the period. The scenography is original, with so-called "ghost" furniture: made of contemporary metal but reproducing shapes and motifs taken from medieval illuminations, they allow visitors to identify the function of each piece. Don't miss the impressive kitchens, the banqueting hall lit by beautiful mullioned windows, the covered walkway and the panoramic view from the terrace. Below, you'll see the pretty Val Cocherel garden, with its games and kiosk-snack bar. Ideal for a moment of relaxation after a bath in history.
