CAP FRÉHEL

It is one of the most spectacular sites in the region: in Plévenon, Cape Fréhel - Grand Site de France - raises its pink sandstone cliffs 70 m above the sea. From here, the view over the emerald expanse and the coast is unbeatable: when the sky is clear, you can see as far as Paimpol on one side and the Cotentin peninsula on the other. The panorama is even more impressive from the top of the lighthouse, which takes us more than 100 m above sea level. The 32-metre high square tower is the emblem of the area and has been listed as a historical monument since 2011. It is one of the five most powerful lighthouses in France: the range of its light varies from 200 m, when the fog is very dense, to 120 km in good weather. It was built in 1950, after the previous building was dynamited by the Germans in 1944. Of the very first lighthouse, lit in 1702, only the Vauban tower remains. Covered by vast expanses of moorland, the cape is criss-crossed by paths that wind through heather and gorse: a landscape of great beauty when both are in flower, from spring to autumn, and superbly desolate in winter. It is also an ornithological reserve where, if you are attentive, you will be able to see various species of nesting birds: razorbill, northern fulmar, black-legged kittiwake, herring gull or sea gull, crested cormorant... Cape Fréhel is the starting point of beautiful hikes: for example, to reach the fort La Latte, count on a 1h30 walk, by the coastal path.
