Located at the northern end of Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to less than 400 people. It is the gateway to Freycinet National Park and the Freycinet Peninsula. There are several lodgings and some businesses, but nothing excessive. The town was founded in 1934 when the area began to become a popular destination for fishermen and hikers. The peninsula is rightly renowned for its spectacular coastal scenery and the emphasis today is on hiking and swimming on one of the many surrounding beaches. The park's Visitor Centre is less than a mile from the town center.
