Yarram, with a population of just over 2,500, is the regional center of a thriving agricultural district. Its name is said to come from "Yarram Yarram", meaning "much water" in the Aboriginal language. In 1841, the site was chosen by a Scottish clan leader, Aeneas Ronaldson MacDonnell, to import cattle from his native Highlands. Close to Port Albert, one of the first commercial ports of the time, the town quickly developed thanks to the dairy industry. Today, tourism is an important part of the town's economy, with the proximity of Tarra Bulga National Park (Tarra Valley), Port Albert and, further afield, Agnes Falls.
