A small town less than 20 km south of Launceston, in the heart of an area renowned for its river fishing, Longford is listed by the National Trust for its many historic buildings. Founded in 1813 by pioneers from Norfolk Island, the town took its name from the Longford Inn, built in 1827. Between 1953 and 1968, what was once the Longford Circuit (north of the city) hosted no less than two Australian Grand Prix races, the Tasmanian Formula Championship, and several touring car and motorcycle races. There are few traces of the track, the two bridges have been destroyed and the B52 crosses what was the circuit.
