Some 180 km east of Melbourne, in a verdant valley, Walhalla was, after the discovery of gold in the region in 1863, one of Australia's most prosperous towns, with a population of 3,000. Today, however, all that has changed, and the population has dwindled to around 30. The town almost became a ghost town before most of the buildings were restored for the enjoyment of the 100,000 visitors who pass through every year. The Walhalla Historical Museum, in the old post office, also serves as an information center, and the Walhalla Goldfiels Railway, an old steam train, takes you to Thomson and back in 20 minutes. A beautiful site.
