Healesville, 50 km northeast of central Melbourne, is home to nearly 8,000 people. The town is located on the Watts River, a tributary of the Yarra River. It was the gold fields of Gippsland and Yarra Valley that led to the formation of a settlement and the creation of a town in 1864. Healesville is named after Richard Heales, who was Premier of Victoria from 1860 to 1861. Very lively on weekends, due to its proximity to Melbourne, Healesville is mainly visited for its animal sanctuary which houses several hundred animals. The industries of the region are timber, horticulture and viticulture.
