Yarra Glen is located in the Yarra Valley, just 40 km north-east of Melbourne city center. Although it is home to only 3,000 people, due to the attractiveness of the Yarra Valley's vineyards and landscapes, its population increases significantly on weekends and during school vacations. The Ryrie brothers were the first Europeans to settle in the area in 1837. They produced their first wine on the Yering estate in 1845. The Yarra Glen Grand Hotel, now a National Trust building, dates from 1888. It was damaged in the Black Friday fires of 1939 and also in the fires of 2009.
