Bendigo, 150 kilometers from Melbourne and more prestigious than Ballarat, marks the northern limit of Victoria's goldfields. From 1851 onwards, fortune-hungry gold miners built Victorian edifices that were both imposing on the outside and highly refined on the inside. Public gardens, statues and wide avenues create a truly English colonial setting in a typically Australian landscape. Vintage streetcars, saved from demolition in 1970, now take tourists along the boulevards to Deborah's gold mine. Taste the splendor of Bendigo, a beautiful, elegant and relatively prosperous city of around 100,000 inhabitants. It is an ideal base from which to explore Victoria's gold heritage. Bendigo, in addition to its hotels, including the magnificent Shamrock Hotel, its many restaurants and its somewhat bobo atmosphere, boasts one of Victoria's finest art galleries. It's a great place to discover the architecture of the Victorian era.
