Echuca, on the Murray River, was built in 1853. It is linked by a bridge to Moama, its neighbor in New South Wales. At the end of the 19th century, Echuca was Victoria's2nd port and the main transfer point for wool, livestock, grain and timber, which arrived by boat and were then transported by rail to Melbourne. Today, the town of 15,000 inhabitants lives mainly from tourism (it is home to Australia's largest fleet of paddle steamers) and agriculture. Don't miss a stroll through the old port buildings (Echuca Wharf) or a visit to the Port Echuca Discovery Center.
