Wilson's Promontory National Park dominates the coast almost 200 kilometers southeast of Melbourne. It is the southernmost point of the Australian continent. It owes its popularity to its superb beaches, including Squeaky Beach with its sand that creaks with every step, its gulfs, capes and red granite rocks. Battered by the winds and powerful waves of Bass Strait, The Prom, as it's known to Melbournians, offers beautiful views of the coast. The park's 49,000 hectares are filled with thickly forested temperate mountains, shady valleys, small tree-fern gullies, spectacular coastal landscapes, heather barrens, grassy plains, wetlands and deserted beaches. The park is ideal for viewing wildlife such as emus, kangaroos, wombats and a multitude of birds. The park's only road leads to the village of Tidal River on the west coast, the starting point for all park tours. This sanctuary of wild beauty is very atypical of the Victorian landscape and should not be missed
