Kupres/Купрес (pronounced "koupress") has a population of about 2,800, 90% of which are Bosnian-Croats. It is the capital of the municipality of Kupres (5,000 inhabitants), which belongs to Canton 10. It is 23 km southwest of Bugojno, 37 km north of Tomislavgrad, 44 km northeast of Livno and 45 km southeast of Šipovo. Bus connections to Livno, Tomislavgrad, Mostar and Sarajevo.Situated at an altitude of 1120 meters and surrounded by mountains, this agricultural village has little charm. It was destroyed three times during the 20th century, in 1942, in 1992 and in 1994. Having lost almost all its Bosnian-Serb inhabitants (50% of the population in 1991), it has been rebuilt by focusing on leisure activities: paragliding, horseback riding, mechanical sports and, above all, skiing with three resorts nearby. The most important one, Adria Ski (10 km to the southwest), reaches an altitude of 1,550 m on Mount Čajuša and has 13 km of slopes. For all these activities, information can be found at the Croatian House (Hrvatski Dom, Monday-Friday 8am-3pm, www.kupres-smjestaj.com). Kupres is also famous for its traditions, such as the Strljanica, which dates back to 1687: every first Sunday of July a grass cutting contest is organized. Dozens of men in traditional clothes compete to see who can harvest the hay for their livestock the fastest. Since 2020, this custom is on the representative list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.
