Ettal is an abbey and a brewery in one. And a magical baroque setting at the foot of the mountains.
Founded in 1330 by Ludwig IV of Bavaria, the Benedictine Abbey of Ettal still exists today. The abbey's basilica is well worth a visit: the 18th century saw the addition of a splendid dome. Inside, the round hall beneath the dome is marked by striking pink and gold tones. Today, some thirty Benedictine monks live and work here. Since 1609, they have been brewing beer here, marketed under the name Ettaler. But they are also the originators of a beer known throughout Germany: Benediktiner, now produced elsewhere.
