The picturesque Echizen-Ono was founded in 1575 by Nagachika Kanamori, a servant of Nobunaga Oda, the most important feudal lord of his time. Its construction was inspired by the Kyoto model. Although it does not enjoy the same fame as Kyoto, a visit to Echizen-Ono is more than recommended. The streets are quiet and the atmosphere very peaceful, and this is also what one expects from a trip to Japan. The city is known for its springs and the quality of its waters. The Oshozu spring is one of the 100 best in the country. Echizen-Ono can be reached from Fukui station in 1 hour via the JR Etsumihoku line for ¥680
