Miravalles volcano was the only one that did not have national park status. In 2019, on World Environment Day, Costa Rica created this 29th national park. Spread over 4,300 ha it consolidates a circuit of parks already well established in the region. Promising an active involvement in the protection of biodiversity, it is intended to offer a protected space to endangered species such as jaguars and tapirs. Officially named Miravalles Volcano National Park Jorge Manuel Dengo Obregon, it pays tribute to this precursor of environmental protection in Costa Rica, who died in 2012.
