Bijagua is the closest town to the Tenorio Volcano National Park, where the Celeste River flows. The area was developed in the 1950s, when the first families used to take ox carts for at least two days to get to Canas. Today, you only need 30 minutes by car. In 2010, informed tourists still shared the access map to the Celeste River as a secret. But since 2011, the new trail has made access to Tenorio Park easier, lodges have sprouted, and the people of Bijagua and Katira have also done some work in their homes to accommodate tourists. All lodges can now offer you a transfer and a guide to the park, which is not far from Bijagua anyway. In the city center, you will find ATMs, a few bars and restaurants, and small hotels or lodges. In 2018, the track was finished to be tarred in its totality between Katira (ruta 4) and Bijagua (ruta 6), that takes away of course of the charm of former days... but now Sarapiqui is only 3 hours away and Liberia only 45 min.
