In Playa Grande, leatherback turtles have been coming to bury their eggs for thousands of years, between December and March. Few beaches in the world have the honor of receiving the visit of these mastodons (it is not uncommon for some specimens to reach 500 kg for 2 m in length), but there are 3 in Costa Rica alone. As turtles always choose the same place to lay their eggs, it is forbidden to damage the beach, under penalty of never seeing the reptiles again. That's why the access to Playa Grande is controlled by guards. The beach is one of the favorite spots for surfers (whether you are a beginner or an expert) because of its excellent waves.
