Situated on top of a 200 m high granite hill, the village of Avis was the seat of one of the most important military orders in the country, the Order of Avis. It also gave its name to one of the most famous Portuguese dynasties. It is said that in the 13th century its castle was built at night and in secret, the walls under construction were covered with branches during the day so as not to alert the Moorish enemy. The village, with its medieval layout and beautiful whitewashed houses with colorful accents, is worth a visit on foot. If you are tired, take a break in the charming Jardim do Mestre de Avis, with the immense plain below.
