According to local legends, the village of Viseisei (15 min north of Nadi) is the oldest village in Fiji: the Mataqali are said to be the descendants of the first Melanesians who landed on the west coast of Viti Levu around 1300 AD. The colony settled here, prospered for many years and named itself after the chief's house, "Nakauvadra". You can visit the village (made up of a few family tribes) by observing a few rules: pay an entrance fee to the villagers, don't wear a hat and cover your shoulders and knees, and bring your kava to traditional ceremonies.
