Khancoban, with a population of less than 350, is the last town in New South Wales before the border with Victoria. It is also the last town on the Alpine Way that runs through the southern part of Kosciuszko National Park. Khancoban is mainly inhabited by the workers of Snowy Hydro Limited, the company that runs the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme. There are two hydro-electric stations of the scheme in the vicinity of the town, Power Stations Murray 1 and Murray 2. A Visitor Information Centre is located at Murray 1, about 10 km east of town on the Alpine Way.
