A true paradise for wilderness lovers, the Danum Valley is a fabulous site, home to one of the world's most complex ecosystems. A 472 km2 protected area, nature flourishes here in its primeval state. Overflowing with an infinite variety of animals, it boasts more than 110 species of mammal, 327 types of bird, reptiles, amphibians and thousands of insects. Dominated by dipterocarp trees with canopies of up to 70 metres, this immense humid jungle is home to over 15,000 plant species of rare density. The Danum Valley Field Centre attracts international scientists and is one of the Top 3 tropical forest research centers in the world. If you can afford it, a stay at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge will make the experience all the more exciting. You'll need real walking shoes, anti-mosquito socks, mosquito repellent, a flashlight and a sweater, as the nights are chilly.
