Malaysia's second longest river, the Kinabatangan rises in the Crocker Range mountains in the south-west and flows 560 km into the Sulu Sea. The river's upstream ecosystem has been severely disrupted by excessive logging and the proliferation of oil palm plantations. However, the lowland forests and mangroves near the coast have largely escaped this exploitation and are home to one of the largest concentrations of wildlife. These include nasal monkeys, orangutans, macaques, gibbons, elephants and large numbers of crocodiles. The region is renowned for its diversity of birds, including 6 species of hornbills, egrets, kingfishers, falcons, pheasants, parakeets... Most excursions take place from the river. All hotels also organize jungle walks. Appropriate clothing and waterproof footwear are essential. An unforgettable experience for those wishing to observe wildlife and spend a few days in a unique environment.
